Hän Hwëch'in (Hungwitchin) translates into English as ‘River People.’ The Hän are historically distinguished from other interior Native Alaskans (Athabaskans) by their language and their homeland which was largely defined by the mountains, lakes, rivers, and creeks named by their language.

The Hungwitchin Corporation was officially incorporated, July 23, 1973, under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, which is referred to as ANCSA. The Hungwitchin Corporation aims to support and encourage the economic, social, cultural, and personal well-being of all Natives enrolled in Eagle Village and its surrounding area.
